This fund is a signatory to both the UK Stewardship Code (a code created to encourage good practice principles on engagement between investors and investee companies), and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment, which encourages active ownership globally.
It has an energetic approach to ownership and good long-term returns. For example, in the second half of 2012 Kames considered all UK shareholder resolutions put forward by the companies that they invest in and voted at 110 company meetings.
Of the 110 meetings, 82 per cent were voted with management, and 12 per cent against management and included votes on issues such as better disclosure on remuneration practices. The fund, managed by Audrey Ryan, one of the few female fund managers, has returned 15.22 per cent in the year to end of January 2013, and 37.13 per cent over five years.
